Connecting with Gen Z: The Critical Need for Onboard Communications

The commercial maritime industry is facing a crewing crisis, and onboard connectivity may be key to helping solve this challenge. The aging of the workforce in general, including seafarers, has been felt worldwide. At present, demand for maritime crew is estimated at about 1.45 million, including some 790,500 officers. There is a supply shortage of about 16,500 officers, while the surplus is estimated at about 119,000 ratings. (Source: 2021 Seafarer Workforce Report)

The industry must turn to a new generation of seafarers – Generation Z, born between 1996 and 2015. Currently, this demographic group makes up 26% of the global population, and Gen Zers will make up 27% of the workforce by 2025. In a recent study by Dell, 91% of Gen Z respondents stated that technology would be a decisive factor in choosing a job. 98% own a smartphone. This is the “digital generation.”

The next few years in the shipping industry will be challenging due to officer and crew shortages. Gen Z will fill the gaps – but only if we understand this generational group’s unique needs and preferences.

However, Gen Z’s love of technology could be at the heart of the solution. While working on a vessel for weeks or months at a time, connectivity can be the key to communication with family and friends. Easy access to entertainment and diversion and continued use of their smartphone can ease stress and burnout.

Focusing on crucial issues like connectivity will help shipping companies recruit and retain the workforce they need to grow their businesses in an ever-changing world.
