| DIRECTV HDTV Service
DIRECTV is in the process of moving its HDTV programming from its Ku-band satellites to new Ka-band satellites. Reception of Ka-band broadcasts requires larger antennas and additional equipment. KVH TracVision systems and all other domed mobile satellite antennas support Ku-band reception only due to size constraints and other technical complexities. As a result, KVH TracVision systems cannot support reception of DIRECTV’s new Ka-band HD broadcasts. KVH TracVision systems may be configured to receive a limited selection of HDTV channels still broadcast by DIRECTV's Ku-band satellites. Contact the KVH Sales Department for details.
However KVH is pleased to offer full support for DIRECTV’s complete Ku-band programming selection, including all standard definition programming, so you can still rely on TracVision to connect you to 300+ channels of outstanding digital programming from DIRECTV.
Frequently Asked Questions
I’m a TracVision owner and DIRECTV HD subscriber. What’s going to happen?
Based on our conversations with DIRECTV, it looks like a very limited selection of HDTV programming will be available on the existing Ku-band satellites well into 2008 and possibly into 2009 as DIRECTV carries out its nationwide home hardware upgrade process. If you are currently a DIRECTV HD subscriber using TracVision, you’ll continue to enjoy a few DIRECTV HD channels, as well as all of the standard-definition channels.
How many HDTV channels are available on the Ku-band satellites?
As of late April 2008, DIRECTV was offering roughly 15 HDTV channels via its Ku-band satellites. However this is subject to change. For a current list, click here.
Will I still get able to receive DIRECTV’s regular programming?
Absolutely! DIRECTV’s standard-definition programming will continue to be broadcast by DIRECTV’s Ku-band satellites for years to come and you’ll be able to enjoy them all with your TracVision system.
Does my TracVision support any other HDTV services?
Definitely! All new marine and RV TracVision systems1 are 100% compatible with DISH Network’s exciting HD programming service and the DISH Network HDTV 211 Receiver along with Bell ExpressVu’s HDTV service in Canada. Plus, an easy software upgrade is available to add this feature to many existing TracVision systems. Unlike competing systems that offer HDTV only for a single service, your TracVision antenna can easily switch from one service to another simply by swapping the receiver!
